pre-recycling in support of the veg

I'm two weeks into my first ever veg garden and already I feel robbed.

I had been away on business for a few days and returned on Friday night, eager to see progress around the garden. I was somewhat distraught as I reached the area containing my future food source.  Some little blighters had been at the brassica.

I'm not entirely sure what had been nibbling on them but two of my cauliflower plants were gone --nibbled right down to the roots.  A few cabbages and broccoli had beautifully(!) re-sculpted leaves where the edges had been chewed away.

Rabbits?  I don't think so as I have never seen a rabbit in the garden or in the surrounding fields.

Mice?  I guess it is possible!  Would they eat a whole plant? (four leaves)

Next morning a decided to establish operation veg protection.  I put my thinking cap on and came up with the idea of protecting each plant individually.

Being rural I am not offered a door-side recycling service by the local council, just general waste.   I keep aside glass and plastic bottles and every few months a drive to our nearest recycling centre and deposit my waste.  Luck was on my side as I had not been for some time and I therefore had an abundance of two-litre plastic bottles.

I set about relieving the containers of their tops and bottoms and proudly amassed a generous collection of ready made veg-defenders.

The result -- my very own army, always standing to attention, hopefully protecting my young veg.

My private veg army

Time will tell how useful these are, and I will report back in due course.  As an added bonus I watered the plants last night by pouring some liquid love inside the tube.  This had the added bonus of focusing the water rather than it draining all around the nearby soil.
