The veg is in

Well avid readers (I'm hoping there are a few, but it is early days!).....The veg is in.

I have a corner of my garden which is identified as the 'veg patch' by previous owners. Late last year I employed the services of a local chap to rotovate the area -- I'm told that is the thing to do.  Last week it had another turn of the machine and I decided, rightly or wrongly, that the time had come to plant some vegetables.

Off I went to the local store and purchased an array of seedlings -- is that the correct term?  They were not seeds but small plants a few inches tall!

With much enthusiasm, and no real clue what I was doing, I set about putting them in  the ground. Prior to the birth of my veg garden I read up a little on each plant -- in general they all needed full sun and 30/40cm apart.

I had a bit of a dilemma with the Onions.  The book talks about Onion Sets but I didn't have much of a clue what that was.  The diagram was a bunches of full-grown onions and my seedlings were three or four in an individual seed cell.  Rightly or wrongly I split the onions up.

I planted everything about 30 cm apart but now that I look at the finished results they seem a little close.  Of course I anticipate a 50% death rate so there will be some natural selection!

My vegetable garden.  The area top right will become the potato corner soon.

In the end I realised I had bought way too many plants so I passed the spare onto a neighbour, who also suggested I cover up my brassica as the wood-pigeons are quite partial to it.
